Git Gud Scrub

Somewhere along the way dying over and over I found some inspiration for our latest song:

This one is titled “My Dear Artorias”. If you’ve played the Artorias of the Abyss DLC from Dark Souls 1 then you know who we’re talking about. Spoilers ahead if you haven’t: best we can figure is Knight Artorias was sent to investigate the weird stuff happening in the town of Oolacile, which was being consumed by the Abyss. He arrives and Manus “Father of the Abyss” has his number. Artorias is consumed and left in a sorry state. Eons later the player comes along and defeats Artorias, releasing him from the Abyss and proceeds to confront Manus.

The question I had in mind is what was it that allowed Manus to defeat Artorias. What was his flaw. I think it was pride, vanity, and ambition which are all flavors of each other. Manus used this shortcoming as the chink in Artorias’ armor and overcame him. The player either comes along and suffers from none of these, or they’re just skilled enough or persistent enough to defeat Manus.

The song is a take on what Manus, in a moment of lucidity, might have said to Artorias when they met. The music is taken and radically changed from the song “Souls of Fire” from the Dark Souls OST heard here. I love the melody and the atmosphere how the serenity and the calmness of it contrasts with the gameplay. But if you’re not listening for it, the similarities between “Souls of Fire” and “My Dear Artorias” will probably go unnoticed.

We entered this song in the July 2017 Dwelling of Duels. Always enjoy entering.

Hope y’all enjoy rocking out to this, and pour one out for Artorias

Lyrics:

I knew you’d come
You’re like a moth to flame
Questing on
For glory and fame

Your contempt for the human race
Use all your skill and might
But you’re still leaving here in disgrace

Your lord, your liege is hollow

Swing your sword and your shield till your arms break
Feel the thrill of the kill when you’re taking something
And make it nothing

Guard yourself, but your soul left laid bare
The vanity I can see is staring back at you
I’m staring back at you

I know your story
Your place in the sun
Did you know it’s setting?

Let me share with you
The darkness found in me
They wanted power
I gave them insanity

I won’t stop till I find what was taken from me

Swing your sword and your shield till your arms break
Feel the thrill of the kill when you’re taking something
And make it nothing

Guard yourself, but your soul left laid bare
The vanity I can see is staring back at you
I’m staring back at you

When you stare at me
I stare back at you
